Singing The Blues

Kim Johnson and Michelle Sultan from Hype Coiffure give the rundown on how they created these show-stopping styles

'For this collection, we wanted to create a range of fashion forward looks with a quirky edge. We went for a variety of different styles to highlight the versatility of afro and mixed race hair. We also chose a blue theme for the clothes, styling and make-up to make the images pop and really stand out from the crowd.'

To start with the hair was shampooed and blowdried smooth. On one side we divided strands into small sections, wrapped it around our finger and molded the curl into shape by placing it on straightening irons. Finally, on the other side we brushed the hair over, pinned it in place, before spritzing with Goldwell StyleSign Magic Finish Brilliance Hairspray (£8.70/300ml) for long lasting hold.

Freshly washed hair was twisted into small sections and left overnight. The following morning the hair was untwisted to elevate the curls and enhance volume. Finally, we molded and defined the curls using a small amount of gel, creating this modern and stylish look.

To achieve the luminous blonde hue, short natural hair was pre-lightened using the Goldwell Silk Lift System and a toner. Next we cut the hair using a texturising technique. To create the desired shape we relaxed, washed and wrap-set and to complete the look, we used Goldwell StyleSign Superego Structure Styling Cream (£8.99/75ml) to spike it for a fierce finish.

To create the base shape we cut the hair into a bob. Small sections of strands were crimped with a fine crimper to give masses of volume and texture. We continued this technique throughout the rest of the hair, until all sections had been covered. Finally, we brushed the hair out and for extra hold applied Goldwell Style Sign Magic Finish Brilliance Hairspray (£8.70/300ml).
