Powder Power
Make-up artist Emma Stewart tests out face powders, to see which has covering power

With winter finally here, you probably think you can dispense with your trusted face powder.

However, just because it's not hot and sunny outside anymore, is no reason to stop using face powder. Not only is it great for setting make-up, but it also helps to give a matte finish, as well as helping to protect your skin from winter chills and breezes.

How to apply
There are two effective ways of applying face powder, either by using a brush, or using a face-puff. Which type of application you use, is dependant on what type of skin you have.

If you have oily skin, use a face-puff to apply powder, as oily skin tends to need a little more powder for good coverage, because of the higher oil content. If however, you have normal to dry skin, then using a brush is best, because you don’t need a lot of powder to get an even coverage.

When applying face powder, you should use a sweeping motion with your brush or puff, and lightly cover the face, starting with cheeks first, then forehead, and finishing by in-filling around the nose, eyes and chin. Never press too hard, as this may cause some areas to get more coverage then others.

CHARLES FOX

CHARLES FOX
Ultra Translucent Powder
£3.50

Not only excellent on price, but easy to apply, and gave great coverage. Ideal if you have oily skin, but perhaps not so good if you have dry skin.
Stockists: 0870 2000369.

MAC

MAC
Studio Finish Face Powder
£15.00

I found this powder to be quite thick, but gave very good coverage. As long as you are careful when applying a thicker powder, it can work wonders.
Available from major department stores.

COSMETICS A LA CARTE

COSMETICS A LA CARTE
Silk Touch Loose Powder
£25.00

As the name suggests, this powder is silk-like and goes on like a dream. The coverage wasn’t bad, but I found that it penetrated the skin a little too quickly, so it didn't last as long a I would have liked.
Stockists: 020 7622 2318.

IMAN

IMAN
Luxury Loose Powder
£19.95

This product felt very smooth and comfortable on my skin, but perhaps isn’t quite heavy enough if you have very oily skin.
Stockists: 01280 707499.

SACHA

SACHA
Micro-Fine Loose Powder
£7.95

A suprisingly thick powder, which gave excellent coverage. Perfect if you’re looking for a powder to go over a foundation.

CLINIQUE

CLINIQUE
Blended Face Powder
£17.50

By far the best packaging, and comes with a great twist-up brush. The perfect powder if you are applying it over the top of a foundation, but not so good on its own.
Available from major department stores.
