Smilepod’s hygienist, Samantha Ackerman, gives the low down on teeth health over the summer months

London’s meltdown, as the heatwave sends us into ice-cream frenzy and sugary cocktail heaven, but it’s not just your waistline that will suffer…

There’s no denying that the sun encourages naughty behaviour while assuaging any feelings of guilt, but it’s your teeth that will bear the brunt of this sugary onslaught and they’re extra susceptible to decay thistle of year.

Here are some tips on how you can still enjoy your favourite summer treats without inflicting too much pain and damage to you pearly whites.

8 easy ways to look after your teeth

1. We all enjoy a poolside daiquiri, but drink from a straw to limit the amount of times your teeth are in contact with sugar and citrus. Both of these can cause dental decay and cavities so it gives an extra layer of protection.

2. Electric toothbrush – Both manual and electric toothbrushes are effective if used correctly, but it is generally easier to do a job and remove all of the plaque effectively from the teeth with an electric toothbrush.

3. Brushing should be twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to remove any plaque and build up and excesses from the day

4. Spit don’t rinse – to get the benefits out of your fluoride toothpaste you should not rinse with water when you brush, instead just spit out the excess and allow the rest to remain on the teeth.

5. Interdental cleaning – this is essential to clean the areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Interdental bushes or floss should be part of your daily routine. If you are not sure how, your Smilepod hygienist will be happy to show you during your appointment.

6. Limit sugar – sugary food and drinks cause decay in the teeth and should be limited as much as possible.

7. Cut out tobacco. Tobacco use whether smoking, chewing or sheesha carries numerous health risks and greatly increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer. A lot of the damage is completely reversible once you quit.

8. Attend your dentist regularly for both check-ups and hygiene appointments. We will advise you how often you should coming in. Keep up with the recommended recalls to maintain excellent dental health and brush twice daily.
