How to protect your natural hair all summer

We love summer, but the rays can wreck havoc on your hair. Here are our tips for a stress-free, bouncy hair summer

Summer is the best! But it can play havoc with your hair: all those sunrays drying out your locks, and leaving them damaged. That doesn’t have to be the case though. With the right approach, you can keep your natural hair looking fresh and bouncy throughout the warm season.

If you’re looking for some top tips to help protect your natural hair this summer, here you go:

  • Keep it moist: The sun will definitely dry out your hair if you don’t take action. Use a specialist product at night, and keep a spray bottle of water with you during the day to make sure your hair and scalp don’t dry out. Bottled water is best, particularly if you live in a hard water area.
  • Condition more often: Conditioning in between your weekly wash is going to help keep your hair in good shape. In addition to that, give your hair a deep conditioning treatment every two weeks. Your hair will really benefit from letting the conditioner soak in, as this will help rejuvenate any lost moisture. You can also give oil rinsing a try, if your hair and scalp have become especially dry. Coconut, olive and avocado oils are all good; just don’t forget to apply your usual conditioner afterwards.
  • Protect and maintain: Perhaps the best way of keeping your hair in top condition during the summer months is to shield it from the sun. Accessorise with scarves, seek shade during the hottest periods of the day, and apply a UV protectant spray for those times when you just have to be in the sun. If your hair still shows some signs of stress – which it’s likely to – then that’s when you should look into quality hair treatments for damaged hair in order to nourish it back to life.
  • Simplify your style: One thing you might want to consider is going short for the summer. It’s a lot easier to keep shorter hair in good and bouncy condition, and it can keep you a lot cooler too. If you don’t want to hack it all off then go for styles like braids, or tie your hair up for a funky summer look to care for it. Make sure you get regular trims to get rid of split ends too.

With the right conditioning, moisturising and styling regime, you can keep your hair looking and feeling healthy throughout this summer. When things do go wrong you will need to react, and good hair treatments for damaged hair will help protect and rejuvenate your locks through nurturing oils, sun and heat protectants. Now it’s time to enjoy the sunshine and warm temperatures. Here’s to having great hair throughout summer!
