Joy Bryant launches fashion range in Selfridges

Reinterpreting classic military and vintage-inspired styles from their travels, Basic Terrain is the buzzed-about label that has recently landed in Selfridges, created by Hollywood actress, Joy Bryant and her stuntman husband, Dave Pope.

Joy Bryant is a Yale dropout turned model, turned actress, appearing most recently on NBC’s critically acclaimed show Parenthood and soon to be on Amazon’s Good Girls Revolt. She and husband Dave Pope launched the lifestyle brand Basic Terrain two years ago.

Joy explains, ‘Basic Terrain was originally conceived when Dave declared that he wanted “to get back into sewing,” something I didn’t know he was even into. With the cheap machine he purchased from Target, he set up shop in our dining room. He made a hammock and started working on a pair of snowboard pants. Selfishly motivated, I handed him a pair of Thai fisherman pants that I brought back from Cambodia and suggested he make them in denim, something I hadn’t seen before. They came out so cool that friends and strangers all wanted a pair. “Wouldn’t it be funny if we sold these?” I half-jokingly asked Dave. “If I had a better machine, I could make better stuff.” So I got him a better machine.
