How to take care of your box braids

Box braids are the most favoured protective hairstyle this summer and come in many variations. Though a protective style, you still need to look after your scalp and hair to make sure you get the most wear out of them and to make sure that you don’t cause any damage to your natural hair. Ignoring your hair for the duration of wear is a big no-no! We list the ways in which you can look after your box braids

1. Scalp care
Box braids expose your scalp a lot more than usual, which leaves it prone to dryness. If water isn’t enough to quench the thirst, try good old Coconut Oil. Some braid sprays may contain irritants so read the ingredients carefully and look for natural lubricants and moisturisers. The last thing you want whilst rocking box braids is an itchy scalp. Cleansing the scalp is a must do, as your hair is still going to collect dirt and environmental build up. Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (£2.99) mixed with water is a box braid favourite to get yourself a clean scalp.

2. Night time protection
You’re probably already used to wrapping your hair at night time and having box braids should be no exception. Wrapping them up at night will ensure that your box braids don’t get frizzy and will prevent moisture leaving your hair and scalp. Use a Silke London 100% Pure Silk Hair Wrap (£45) to protect your braids whilst you sleep.

3. Take care
Styling box braids can be a fun way to switch things up, however strenuous styling is a one way ticket to damaged hair and thinning edges. If you feel like your hair is pulling too much, ease off and switch to a different style. What you don’t want is for your hair to suffer whilst in it’s protective style. 4. Watch the time
Leaving your braids in for too long can cause bald patches and hair loss. Box braids are to be left in no longer than 4-6 weeks. As much as you might love your new look, it is meant to be a temporary protective solution for hair that needs some extra TLC. Snapped hair is not what you want after wearing box braids so watch the time and make sure you take them out when the time is right.
