Award winning advanced aesthetic practitioner Dr Uche shares advice on how to wake up tired looking eyes

Dark circles? Hollowing? Bags? Any of these sound like your eyes? If yes, then you know dealing with these can be a real eye sore (sorry, we couldn’t resist).

Like me, you may have struggled with some or all of these:

  • Sunken appearance of the eyes
  • Darkening of the lower eyelid
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Doesn’t fix with makeup

You’ve probably used tens of different products, drank bucket loads of water and tried hibernating like a bear – but still no luck. First thing is first, for many of you this issue is genetic and not a direct result of lifestyle. Consequently, you might be noticing changes in your early 20s! For others, a lifestyle fix may solve the problem but, we all know in the fast-paced world we live in some of these fixes are just not practical.

The Remedy
So, let’s look at some practical high impact solutions. You can use any combination of the following treatments but, a consultation with a qualified professional is the very first thing that you should always do. Not everyone is the same and even this advice may need to be tailored to you. Think of this as clueing you up and not a replacement for a pro.

1. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Impact: High
Time to results: 1 day to 1 week
Application: Once
Lasts: 9 months to one year

A Tear Trough Deformity is the medical term that describes hollowing of under the eyes with some associated eye bag formation and/or darkening under the eyes.

By using the correct type of hyaluronic acid filler and the correct injection technique, we can create volume under the eyes and reduce the shadow; giving a near instant brighter look to your eyes. Pain associated with the procedure is short lived and minimal, as is bruising. For those of you where bags are the problem, mild to moderate eye bags can also be helped with hyaluronic acid fillers by creating a more even, flat appearance.

If you have severe bags under the eyes then you may not be suitable for fillers and a treatment like PlexR (depending on skin complexion) may be more appropriate. Furthermore, when addressing tear troughs, filling the cheeks should also be considered as an alternative or combination treatment. This provides support to the above structures; helping to prevent and improve bag formation.
This technique requires a high level of skill, so make sure you seek out someone competent in the procedure.

2. Vitamin C Serums

Impact: Moderate
Time to results: from 6-8 weeks
Application: Daily
Lasts: With continued use

These help with skin darkening aka hyperpigmentation. There are many of them about but, only a few are in the correct form in order to be effective. Look for products with 10% to 20% vitamin C in the L-Ascorbic Acid form. Any less probably won’t be effective and any more has no added benefit. I often tell people that their vitamin C serum should be a clear fluid in a dark bottle (protecting it from sunlight). If you’re purchasing something that looks like that then you’re probably on the right track. If it’s combined with vitamin E – even better!

3. Elastiderm Eye by Obagi

Impact: Moderate
Time to results: from approximately 9 weeks
Application: Daily
Lasts: With continued use

I won’t often recommend products from particular companies unless I’ve personally used them or, like in this case, they are from ground breaking companies such as Obagi. This product is right up there on the market. This could be considered your tool of choice if you’re suffering from fine lines around the eyes and want a tighter look. It boasts some great numbers (46% increase in elasticity in nine weeks) and comes from one of the few companies I trust to use on my own skin.
